Disconnected: Talking to America Magazine Washington Cardinal Wuerl claimed that – quote – Pope Francis has reconnected the Church with Vatican II. In other words: the former popes, particularly those who appointed Wuerl as bishop and Cardinal, where disconnected from the Second Vatican Council.
Autarky: According to Wuerl Francis has “picked up where we left off” on Vatican II themes of collegiality and synodality. In reality Francis uses collegiality and synodality as a smoke screen and runs the Church like an autarky.
Contradiction: Wuerl further claims that Francis has refocused the church on “a moral theology that rests on scripture and Jesus’ command to love”. In reality Francis’ Amoris Laetitia is openly contradicting the Gospels and the letters of Saint Paul.
Double Standard: Wuerl criticizes the popes for having used the sedia gestatoria, flabella and the tiara. Quote, “This can’t be what the Gospel is all about.” He adds: “Now you see Pope Francis, he shows up in a simple white cassock and everyone says that’s where it should be.” Wuerl himself lives in a renovated 43 million Dollars penthouse in DC’s most elite neighborhood.
Bling Poverty: As a bishop of Pittsburgh, Wuerl lived in one of the city’s wealthiest neighborhoods in a luxurious 39-room mansion filled with antiques, sacred art, Oriental rugs and elegant furniture from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries and a spacious wine cellar. But in the interview he says, ” It was no small accomplishment for Francis to say that a much simpler church in terms of all the accoutrement is going to be a much more effective church.”
